Double delight

It was a double win for Ummera Smoked Products at the 2020 Great Taste awards

Ummera Smoked Products was awarded the Great Taste Golden Fork and a 3-star Great Taste award for its Smoked Organic Irish Salmon at this year’s Great Taste food and drink awards.

The awards drew 12,777 products from 106 countries and were judged by 144 of the industry’s most discerning palates, including cook, writer and champion of sustainable food, Melissa Hemsley, celebrated Spanish chef, José Pizarro, Kavi Thakrar from Dishoom, food writer and cook, Xanthe Clay, as well as food buyers from Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason and Waitrose.

The Irish smokehouse impressed the panel with its organic salmon’s ‘lovely texture,’ ‘great mouthfeel,’ and ‘a level of smoke that is measured to perfection.’ One judge commented: ‘This is as good a piece of smoked salmon as I've had in years.’

Established in Cork nearly half a century ago, the company began smoking wild Atlantic salmon but depleting stocks as a result of overfishing has seen the company move to organically reared Irish salmon.

The double win is the latest in a line of awards, as Anthony Creswell, MD of Ummera Smokehouse explains: “Seventeen years ago we were awarded a Silver 2-star for our Smoked Organic Salmon, then in 2000 we were honoured to be awarded a Gold 3-star and a Golden Fork for our Smoked Silver Hill Duck Breasts, and now we can put the 3-star Gold logo on our smoked salmon!”

A Great Taste Award is a gateway to exciting opportunities for food and drink producers with a listing in the Great Taste book, a directory used by many food retailers, and exhibitions as part of Great Taste Markets at events such as RHS Hampton Court Flower Show and Countryfile Live.

The Golden Fork from Ireland was sponsored by Bord Bia (the Irish Food Board) and the nominees included Gooseberry Spread from Crossogue Preserves in Thurles, Co. Tipperary and Heritage Cure Ham from James Whelan Butchers in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.
